Caldeira Round Trail.
One of the Must-See-Highlights of Faial Island. The 400 m deep and 2.5 km wide Caldeira. The remaining part of a huge island volcano. 7 km you can hike on a marked trail around this amazing natural wonder.
We will drive you from the PÁTIO Ecolodge in 30 minutes to the entrance of the Caldeira Round Trail. You decide, if you want to make the trail with one of our certified Nature Park Guides explaining you the history, the nature, the plants and the geographical aspects of this massive crater or if you decide to walk alone.

Caldeira Descent Trail. The biggest Adventure.
Since the Caldeira of Faial Descent is such a special experience, Faial Natural Park controls the access to the bottom, issuing only a limited number of permits.
For this reason, a certified guide is mandatory for the Caldeira Descent.
After you pick-up, we will descent into the 2.500m wide and 400m deep crater of Faial Island (Caldeira). You will see native forests and a lot of endemic species. Being on the bottom, "Jurassic Park" is waiting for you. An incredible and very special atmosphere. Here you can imagine how Faial was before humans arrived. The trail is difficult because it is very narrow and steep and sometimes, scrambling is necessary. At the bottom you might find mud and flooded areas. You need good physical condition.
We will spent some time at the bottom before we climb up again.

Levada - The water channel trail.
Begin the trail near Cabeço dos Trinta, village of Capelo. Choose the detour on the right end side until the tunnel accessing the interior of the Cabeço, a volcanic cone filled with endemic vegetation. Return the same way until the dirt road, follow right until the water storage tank, that you should cross by the left end side and continue until you find the levada (water channel).
Considered as one of the greatest engineering works of the Azores, the Levadas (The Water Channel) was inaugurated in 1964, after 4 years of construction and 7 years of planning. Located 680 meters high and along 10 km long (nowadays only 8 km can be done), had as main function supply water for the production of hydroelectric energy. The water is captured in several points along the track, and later, channeled to the mini hydric central, in Varadouro.
The trail follows the old water channels and passes a mystical forest with tunnels and bridges. Don’t forget your torch. Your guide will explain a lot about the history and the flora and fauna with a plenty of endemic plants.
This trail is 8 km and a one-way trail where a transfer is needed to come back to the starting point.

Fajã - The Mystery Zone Trail.
At 9 AM we will bring you from the PÁTIO Ecolodge to the start point of the trail in Norte Pequeno. This small village owns nice small vineyards and gardens with old “Adegas”. Unbelievable views at the wild North Coast from Capelinhos Volcano until the Cedros Coast. The trail leads through the Mystery Zone of Faial “Zona do Misteiro”. A place on the island with a real mystery atmosphere. Century old walls and vineyards today covered by wilderness and dark forests are testimonials of several volcano eruptions. Your guide will lead you through this very special area. Showing you hidden caves and talking about the history of this abandoned place.
After some time you will reach the Fajã. A beautiful bay surrounded by up to 400m high cliffs. Your guide will show you the “Ermida de Fajã” a small monastery build by french monks more than 400 years ago. Passing beautiful gardens and vineyards you will arrive at the black beach of the Fajã. Time to cool your feet in the ocean and to relax at the beach.
After some time we will pick you up and bring you back to the Ecolodge (20 min. drive). Arrival 2 PM.
This trail is around 8 km and a one-way trail. You cant do it with only one car. We advise always to use our guide and transfer service.

Horta has a really genuine feel to it, located on an astonishing bay, with it’s famous and colorful Marina used as a stopover for many maritime adventures. It is a city with a real strong connection to the sea, with it’s science and culture focused around it.
These particular features make this a historic and cosmopolitan centre, with a wealthy heritage, surrounded by amazing landscapes – such as the view of the highest mountain in Portugal, Mount Pico.
This city tour will allow you to get to know the city – several historic monuments
and symbolic spaces, as well as the gardens and green parks.
